Antique Gujarati Takhat Coffee Table – 19th Century
This bijou-sized antique Indian coffee table is known locally as a takhat, a form traditionally used as a daybed by the wealthy merchant classes of western India. Dating to the 19th century and originating from Gujarat, this particular example would have belonged to a child, making it an unusually small and increasingly rare survival.
Gujarati takhats are distinguished from their Northern Rajasthani counterparts by their richer decorative quality. They are typically wider in proportion and sit on shorter, squatter legs, often finished with lacquer. Crafted from teak, this takhat features beautifully carved floral decoration running along the apron, showcasing the skilled hand-carving associated with the region.
