
Japanese Zelkova/Elm Brazier - 19thC
Known as a 'Tabako-bon' this tobacco stand with a miniature brazier 'hi-ire' atop dates from the Edo period (1603 - 1867). Made from zelkova (red elm) and brass, it is particularly lovely form.
The three drawers and brass compartment would have been used for keeping tobacco and the carved groove would have held a pipe.
