Japanese Kimono Dansu, Persimmon Wood - Shōwa Era
This beautiful Shōwa era (1926 - 1989) Japanese tansu chest is made from luxurious kaki wood (persimmon). It dates to the 1930's and is made in the style of an isho kimono dansu clothing chest. It's almost certain that this chest was made for a high end shop for storing and selling kimonos.
This chest is unusual as persimmon wood was used almost exclusively for smaller kodansu table cabinets. Persimmon wood tends to warp and requires a skilled craftsman to work it. It's a beautifully elegant wood belonging to the ebony family. It's complemented by anodized hirute (leech) drawer pulls and rust finished recessed side carrying handles
A Japanese two-section iron bound travelling chest dating from the early 20th century. The two sections have four long drawers and each section with iron carry handles. The drawers are veneered artfully with persimmon wood.
