Japanese Isho Dansu With Secret Drawer - Taisho Period
This antique Japanese isho-dansu chest dates from the Taisho Era (1912-1926) and would have been used for clothing storage. The form of this chest is unusual with five large drawers instead of the usual four, and a small drawer outside of the lockbox. Unconventional forms such as this were often made for shops for displaying and storing kimono.
The large number of drawers makes this a highly practical chest of drawers. Isho tansu chests are specifically used for storing clothes. This tansu is constructed with a sugi (cedar) frame and kiri wood drawers.
There is a secret compartment revealed by removing the two square drawers in the lockbox.
Many Japanese antiques we find are poorly restored - we painstakingly restore each piece using traditional Japanese techniques to ensure these pieces last and are loved for many more lifetimes to come.
