Japanese Choba Dansu From Gifu - Meiji Period
This Japanese choba dansu (or cho dansu) merchant chest dates from the Meji Period (1868 - 1912), likely 1880 - 1900. Choba dansu were used by merchants in shops for storing ledgers, money, and seals. This style of tansu is from the Gifu region of Japan. The slatted horizontal sides and sliding doors are traditional to the Gifu region.
This tansu is constructed with hinoki wood (cedar) with sugi (cryptomeria) door, side & top panels. It has plenty of storage and warabite shape handles. In the bottom right corner, a lockable door opens to reveal an additional two drawers. The key is missing from the central lock on the sliding doors. The recessed carrying handles suggest this chest was made later in the Meiji period.
As with most Japanese furniture, the carpentry is excellent and although it is lightweight, it is extremely well-made. It has very functional sliding doors & drawers. All the fittings are original to the piece.
