
Elm Chinese Sideboard From Peking - 19th Century
This classic and refined antique Chinese sideboard is called a Beijing sideboard or Peking sideboard. These sideboards come from the Chinese capital Peking (Beijing) & surrounding areas in North China and are a refined. sophisticated, yet simple design which originated during the Ming dynasty.
Similar examples can be seen in many Chinese furniture books and museums made in expensive woods such as huali & huanghuali. This sideboard is made from northern elm wood (榆木 yumu).
These Chinese sideboards were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. This sturdy piece has a large interior space accessible by two doors and three drawers running above. It also boasts a wonderful rich patina and wood grain. The circular fittings are made from brass.
