Elm Chinese Sideboard From Peking - Late 19thC

These sideboards come from the Chinese capital - Peking (Beijing) & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty. Our pieces are mostly 19th century & early 20th century.

These Chinese sideboards were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship and were usually made from elm, oak or catalpa and occasionally in camphorwood. The fittings are made from brass and are mostly circular in form, but occasionally rectangular.
