Burr Elm Tianjin Sideboard - 19thC

Burr Elm Tianjin Sideboard - 19thC

Tianjin sideboards come from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty and this particular piece was constructed during the 19th century.
The fittings are made from brass and are mostly circular in form as is typical of the Tianjin style. The wood on this is a beautifully variable elm wood and the door panels are made using solid burr elm. Burr elm is difficult to find as it comes from the tree burls, as such it is highly prized in China and therefore more expensive.
These cabinets were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
