
Coffer Table From Gansu Province - 19thC
This pretty antique coffer table from Gansu province has its original painting and is in excellent condition. The panels have been painted with snow lions and the detail is unusual. The single drawer has retained its original iron hardware.
Coffer tables in China had relatively little written about them. This particular piece has beautifully carved flanges with floral motifs often used by northern nomads, They were likely used for clothes and utensil storage by women & servants.
A similar example dating from the 17th century can be found on page 105 of "Chinese Furniture: A guide to collecting antiques" by Mazurkewich.
