Walnut Chinese Gansu Cabinet - 19th Century
This antique Chinese cabinet is made in the traditional Gansu style and is immediately recognisable with its deer hoof legs. This piece has two old repairs carved in the shape of a peach and leaf near the top. Peaches have a long history in Chinese culture representing luck and prosperity, likely beginning in the story of a fisherman by Tao Qian (365-427) who found endless bliss in a peach orchard hidden within a crevice.
With 2 drawers and an internal shelf, this is a very functional piece of storage furniture.
It has old brass hardware and a beautiful rich patina.
A similar example can be found on pages 126 (Fig. 319) & 202 (Fig. 533) of "Chinese Furniture: A Guide to collecting antiques" by Mazurkewich
