Lacquered Sideboard From Tianjin - 19th Century

Lacquered Sideboard From Tianjin - 19th Century

Tianjin sideboards come from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty. The fittings are made from brass and are mostly circular in form, but occasionally rectangular. This one has a rich burgundy lacquer and is constructed from pine. It has three large drawers running along the top and two smaller ones on either side of the main doors. The interior is a large open space with no shelving. These cabinets were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
