This lovely antique Indian spice box is from the region of Rajasthan in Northern India.

Masala boxes & spice boxes were used daily in every household and were integral to every home. This beautifully carved box is a classic example of how divinity permeates everything in India. Boxes like these were used for storing spices, the word "masala" means 'spice mixture' in Hindi. The lid swivels in the traditional way to reveal four compartments.
