Horse Khunti Turban Hanger From Rajasthan - 19th Century
This Indian turban hanger (called a khunti in Hindi) has been carved in the shape of a horse and is stylistically from Southern Rajasthan. This would have been used daily for turbans or a clothes peg. It would have been one of a pair on either side of a door. They are often seen in palaces & houses of the wealthier classes, normally plastered into the wall, other animals like parrots and peacocks are quite common too. See the final photo for details of use.
It still retains its wonderful blue and red paintwork and has developed a wonderful patina over time. This would make a totally unique decorative ornament or gift. A unique and quirky piece of social history.
