Brass Bound Military Chest From South India - 19th Century
This practical and charming antique Indian military chest dates to the 19th century. It is made from jackfruit wood in the Anglo-Indian style and likely would have belonged to a merchant or East Indiaman. The recessed brass bindings are typical of the campaign style introduced by the British East India Company. Its jackfruit construction and more elaborate corners point to it being from South India.
The interior has two candle boxes with additional drawers underneath. A prop stand holds the lid open if needed. This chest has been finished in our UK workshops and has a beautiful and rich patina.
Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
