Chinese Square Side Table From Shanxi - 19th Century
This Chinese square side table was originally made as a stool and features humpback stretchers attached to rounded legs. These antique stool tables are found across China - this one is made with a northern elm (榆木 yumu) frame and poplar wood (yang mu 楊木) center panel. This particular side tables date from the 19th century Qing dynasty and originally came from Shanxi Province.
These Chinese tables are minimalist in style with rounded corners, balanced proportions and pleasing lines. Originally these would have been used as stools and would have been coated in a dark lacquer, however, over time, this has mostly worn away on the table top to reveal a beautiful grain.
