Sarouk Rug - Ca 75 yrs old 141 x 210 cm
Although the art of Persian carpet making goes back many centuries, the popular Sorouk design is a relatively modern style. They were first developed at the beginning of the 20th century as demand for Persian carpets was far higher than what was readily available. They became incredibly popular with the American market between 1910 / 50 and were therefore shipped all over the world from the workshops in Sarouk which is a village located 30 miles north of the city of Sultanabad (today called Arak) and is famed for it's looms and weavers.
This particular rug has been well cared for but some tassels have become lost over time. With the proper care and attention, it can last many more decades. It has a red and white background, displaying a central panel as a leaf, with a border displaying medallions.
