Red Leather Chinese Trunk From Shanghai - Early 20thC
Chinese leather trunks have been used for many centuries with very little change from the classic style. Made for travelling and storage of clothing they are robust and work well in a contemporary western space as a coffee table, or for storage. Chinese leather trunks come in 5 colours; black, red, tan, cream & aubergine.
This particular piece is coated with red lacquer and dates from the early 20th century. The colour is achieved by adding a coloured lacquer onto the tanned leather. The interior is coated with cloth and reinforcing struts. The black lacquer base is a later addition to raise this to coffee table height and the brass is a later replacement as it was likely robbed during the cultural revolution.
