Red Lacquer Ningbo Wedding Cabinet - Ca 1900
This nice original Chinese red lacquer cabinet is from Ningbo in Zhejiang - thus leading to these cabinets being referred to by dealers as Ningbo cabinets. This one is a nice example dating to the 1900 - turn of the century and is made from pine or cedar wood. Ningbo cabinets are usually plain like this one without any gilt or paintwork. They are identifiable by the large brass hardware plate and melon shaped exterior hinges.
Ningbo cabinets were produced in large quantities for the modern tourist market from the 1960's onwards so it's nice to find an original one.
