Red Lacquer Book Cabinet From Shanxi Province - 19th Century
This elegant antique red lacquered Chinese 'square cornered cabinet' is colloquially known as book cabinet. This style of cabinet would have been used by scholars for storing clothes and objects used in the pursuit of wisdom. These cabinets are from Shanxi province but this stye of brass with foliate edges is more commonly found in Gansu province suggesting this piece to have come from Northern Shanxi province.
Originally, this cabinet would have had gilt painting on the doors. Remnants of the detailed floral scenes are still visible and there are still slight traces of gold lacquer where the designs would have been.
Two doors open outwards to reveal a large interior space separated by a single shelf.
