Chinese Red Elm Side Table From Jiangsu - 19thC

Chinese Red Elm Side Table From Jiangsu - 19thC

This side table is made from red elm (zelkova) which is known in China as 'jumu' or 'southern elm.' Red elm as the name suggests has a more red tone and has a more aesthetically pleasant grain. It was considered in China to be superior to its northern elm relative. Red elm is the typical wood used in pieces from Jiangsu province.

It has a beautiful patina and has been painstakingly restored in our Wiltshire workshop.
