Polychromed Indian Nandi Cow Figure From Surat - Ca 1900

Polychromed Indian Nandi Cow Figure From Surat - Ca 1900

This excellent example of a painted antique Indian nandi figurine is beautifully painted. Although this style is the pinnacle of 19th century and early 20th century Indian figurine production, there's still some debate as to where these were made. This style is likely from either Surat or Channapatna in Karnataka. Channapatna is renowned to this day for its production of painted Indian toys.

The Nandi Bull is a symbol of Lord Shiva and cows are still revered and continue to wander the streets in India.
