
Pale Painted Shanxi Sideboard - Ca 1920
A vintage painted sideboard from the northern area of Shanxi province bordering Mongolia, made in the 1920's. This piece has original painting which has been worn over time giving the piece a rustic feel. The remains of foliage and pomegranate fruits can still be seen on the doors.
These cabinets were used by nomadic people for storage of clothes and bedding or grain. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
The front doors have been modified from the original closed front to make it more functional. It would have originally opened from the top by a hatch. The interior space is separated by a shelf.
