Antique Black Lacquer Wedding Cabinet From Shanxi - 19thC
One of a pair of 200 year old black lacquer wedding cabinets from Shanxi province. The other cabinet can be found HERE.
Both cabinets are painted with lucky symbols such as vases and flowers.
Lacquer cabinets were often given as wedding gifts, usually in pairs. Black lacquer is the rarest with red being more common. Other colours such as green, blue, yellow and pink were not used and are only found in modern reproductions. The lacquer is a resin made from the sap of the rhus verniciflua tree. Lacquer has a long history in Chinese furniture and has been used for over 2000 years. The wood used in these cabinets is mostly elm.
