Painted Teak House Shrine From Gujarat - 18th Century
This wonderfully carved Indian shrine would have been set into a wall and used to house the family's favorite deity in a Hindu Gujarati household. Dating from the 18th century, the central doors open to reveal a practical shelf. The traditional Mughal mirhab arch is flanked by two pillars surmounted by parrots.
This house temple still has many layers of its original and earlier paint.
Today, these are often used as decorative shelves or places to display ornaments.
