Painted Sideboard From Shanxi - 19th Century
This Shanxi sideboard dates to the early 19th century and has its original painting. The front of the piece is decorated with traditional floral paintwork on a vibrant red background. It is from Northern China and would have been owned by relatively wealthy citizens who lived in the border areas of Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia & Shanxi.
These cabinets were used for storage of clothes and bedding or grain although they were also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. Originally, this piece would have been top opening via two hatches. The two doors were converted from fixed panels to reveal a large area with a single shelf. This allows it to fit right in as a sideboard in a contemporary home.
