Painted Sideboard From Qinghai - 19th Century
This painted antique Chinese sideboard is from the western province of Qinghai. It has retained its original painting and dates to the 19th century. This has a clear Mongolian influence, however, the painting is more indicative of the Chinese style. Mongolian & Qinghai sideboards were usually made from locally sourced wood, normally elm, poplar, or pine. The rich red frame surrounds three painted door panels which depict scenes of courtly life. The bottom drawers display faded floral paintings.
These cabinets were used by nomadic people for the storage of clothes and bedding or grain. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. The doors open to reveal three compartments separated by a shelf. There are also three drawers running along the bottom of the piece.
