Painted Mongolian Book Cabinet - 19th Century

This beautifully painted 19th century Mongolian book cabinet has retained its original paintwork. It is adorned with images of floral scenes surrounded by vases. These were all items known broadly as 'scholarly objects' which denoted the scholarly status of the owner. The peony was considered the 'king of flowers' and was associated with the Imperial family during the Tang dynasty (618 - 907 AD) leading to it becoming a status symbol depicting wealth & honor. It would originally have been used for the storage of books.

The spacious inner compartment comes with a fitted shelf.
