This stunning Mongolian sideboard has original painting & dates from the 19th century.
Mongolian Sideboards were usually made from locally sourced wood, in this case, this piece is made from a mix of Chinese poplar & pine woods.
These cabinets were originally used by nomadic people for storage of clothes, bedding or grain. It would have originally opened from the top by a hatch.. The front doors have been modified from the original closed front to make it more functional. Unusually, the top has not been fixed & an additional compartment is revealed by opening the top.
These sideboards would also be used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
