Octagonal Bajot Low Prayer Table From Shekhawati - 19thC

Octagonal Bajot Low Prayer Table From Shekhawati - 19thC

This excellent octagonal rosewood prayer table from Shekhawati dates from the 19th century. The quality of brass jali is some of the best workmanship we've seen for many a year. The red & green lacquer feet are turned in the traditional way. Similar brass work is found on merchant boxes and singhasan (god thrones). The style has strong Arabic themes and was likely influenced by the Mughal period in India (1526€“1761).

These types of low Indian prayer tables were known as bajots and are found in many styles around India. They were likely used by both Hindus & Muslims for daily puja and prayer.
