Framed Japanese Woodblock Print Oban By Kuniyoshi
This old Japanese woodblock print is by woodblock print artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi and is the third part of a triptych entitled 'General Watônai hunting the Tigers in Formosa' (Watônai gunko tôshu no zu) which depicts Katô Kiyomasa (Watônai) and his men chasing tigers off a cliff.
The original publisher was Yamaguchi-ya Tôbei in 1855, Edo period. The heavy use of blue shows how popular Prussian Blue (ferric-ferrocyanide) had become after it became readily available in the early 1820's.
These old prints have been reframed by our skilled team in a simple matte black wood frame.
