Mulberry & Walnut Gansu Cabinet - 19thC
This antique Chinese cabinet is made in the traditional Gansu style and is immediately recognisable with its deer hoof legs and use of mulberry wood for the central panels. Gansu province in western China is one of the few provinces that incorporated mulberry wood into their furniture in the 19th century despite its beautiful grain.
The top of this cabinet has been replaced at a later point in its life. With 2 drawers and an internal shelf, this is a very functional piece of storage furniture.
It has old brass hardware and a beautiful rich patina as well as a stunning grain.
A similar example can be found on page 202 of "Chinese Furniture: A Guide to collecting antiques" by Mazurkewich (Fig. 533).
