This Indian octagonal table would have been used by as an occasional table. A small bajot like this one may well have been used by a well off merchant as a seat. The small door allowed for storage of money and valuables. The colourful red lacquer beading and turned lacquer legs are indicative of bajots from Gujarat made in the 19th century. It is crafted in solid rosewood. 

 

These types of low Indian tables were known as bajots and are found in many styles around India, often with a strong Mughal influence.
