Lacquer Turban Box From Rajasthan - 19thC

Lacquer Turban Box From Rajasthan - 19thC

A more unusual find, lacquer turban boxes have become rare in India and are excellent collector's pieces. This box is from Rajasthan and has lovely old patinated brass handles and lock with a key. It is over 120 years old and dates from the late 19th century.

Lacquering is done by the craftsman on a hand-powered lathe. The wooden pot is spun and a lac stick is pressed against the pot. As the pot spins friction softens the lac which coats the surface of the wood. Quite intricate designs can be created by the craftsman using different techniques.

Good quality lacquer pots are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
