North Korean Morijang Side Cabinet - Ca 1900
Korean morijang cabinets are the smallest of the three main staples of Korean antique furniture and fit perfectly into a modern home as a bedside cabinet. This cabinet features white brass with diamond studding suggesting it to be from Northern Korea. The wood used is burr red elm and this cabinet features an uncommon fixed vertical lock. As mentioned in the below book, Korean chests featuring these locks have become collectors items.
These morijang cabinets first came into use in the late 18th century and were used as bed side chests near the mattress in the women's quarter for storing lingerie and small accessories.
This Korean morijang dates to circa 1900 and as with all Korean antique furniture is very lightweight with white brass decoration.
