Kizil Ayak Rug - Ca 1920

The rich history of the Persian carpet goes back to at least 400BC when according to Xenophon, they were so highly prized they were often used as diplomatic gifts. Today, they have gained notoriety across the globe for their beautiful, colourful and complex designs and are well known for their quality and durability with the potential for a single rug to last centuries given the right care.

Kizil Ayak rugs take their name from the Kizil Ayak tribe who inhabit Turkmanistan who originally created them as dowry gifts used in Turkmen wedding ceremonies. Produced from the 19thC onwards, their deep rich reds and blues with repeating floral and geometric patterns have proven a firm favourite in the antique, collector and consumer rug markets of Europe and America.
