Indian Stick Box Storage Chest From Jaisalmer - 19thC

Indian Stick Box Storage Chest From Jaisalmer - 19thC

Known as stick boxes, these antique Indian boxes are found exclusively in western Rajasthan in the Thar desert and were passed down through the family with each generation. They were often used as dowry chests.

Wood is very scarce in the desert and the resourceful tribespeople of this area made these boxes from sticks harvested from the kair tree (capparis decidua) which produces a bitter fruit. The sticks are then riveted together with hand wrought iron fittings to make a very sturdy box.
