Indian Chariot Carving of Shiva Riding a Nandi - 18thC

This hand carved teak chariot carving of Lord Shiva with a Vahana Nandi bull dates from the 18th century.

Chariot panels originate mostly from Tamil Nadu in South India. These chariots, called Ratha Yatra are decorated with carved teak sacred scenes and images of deities.

The chariots are enormous temples on wheels that are drawn through the streets by hundreds of devotees. Temples depicting Jagannath (an avatar of Vishnu) are a true splendor to behold and the name gave origin to the English word "Juggernaut." Which we commonly use today to describe very large trucks.  Fixtures for wall hanging are included.
