Teak Chukki Rice Mill From Rajasthan - 19th Century

Teak Chukki Rice Mill From Rajasthan - 19th Century

This iconic Indian grinder table, known colloquially as a chakki (or chukki), is a beautifully weathered example of vernacular rural craftsmanship from western India. Traditionally used in villages across Rajasthan and Gujarat, these circular teak mills were hand-operated with heavy quern stones for grinding wheat and other grains into flour.

Carved from solid teak, the chakki features a deep circular well with a distinctive small side opening through which the ground flour would emerge during use. The robust construction is elevated on turned legs, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence, while the rim is subtly detailed with small brass stud embellishments fixing iron edging. Decades of use have imparted a rich, darkened patina to the wood, with surface wear, tool marks, and variations that speak directly to its utilitarian origins.

In contemporary interiors, chakki tables have become highly sought-after as round coffee tables, low seating, or even characterful dog beds. This chukki is supplied with a custom glass tabletop, allowing the form and texture of the original mill to remain fully visible whilst offering storage for books or collectibles.
