Polychrome Indian Chair From Bikaner - 19th Century
This rare 19th century Indian polychrome chair is from Bikaner in Rajasthan. It shows the blending of cultures with Bikaneri painting and European regency forms. Chairs like these have always been rare to find in India and are unseen now. They would have been made for a Maharajah or another member of the royal family.
The chair tells a story and would have originally had a woven cane seat - caning holes can be found on the underside of the seat. Sometime in the late 19th century or turn of the century it was converted to a fixed seat.
There are signs of wear which is to be expected on a 200 year old chair - it is a charming addition for any collector of Indian antiques. Bikaner in Rajasthan, is a city that is famous for its fine painting of boxes and the interiors of buildings
