Gilt Red Lacquer Chest From Shanxi - Late 18th Century
This unusual old Chinese chest is from Shanxi province and dates to the late 18th century. It's in beautifully excellent condition given the age and is gilt paintwork on red lacquer.
The quality of this piece is exceptional with a level of painting and gilding rarely seen now. The painting depicts traditional court scenes in Shanxi. A snapshot of life in the Ming & Qing dynasties. The sides are decorated with lucky bats. The lock plate and right handle are original to the piece and made from high quality brass with a beautiful patina. The rounded lifting handle has been replaced at a later date.
