Tonk is a town in Rajasthan state, India and was also a princely state in British India from 1817 to 1947. The founder of the state was Amir Khan, a Muslim of Afghan descent who became a notorious Pindari leader at the beginning of the 19th century. He received the territory of Tonk and the title Nawab, on submitting to the British in 1817 during the Pindari war. Tonk is known for the famous Sunehri Kothi, the golden mansion and the Arabic and Persian Research institute which houses a superb collection of Arabic and Persian manuscripts. Some of these manuscripts are lavishly decorated with gold, rubies, pearls and emeralds.
