Framed Indian Horoscope From Gujarat - Ca 1930's
This painted Indian horoscope is a particularly good example of the style. These tribal horoscopes are hand painted and are unusual to find intact. They are almost entirely exclusive to the states of Rajasthan & Gujarat. This example dates to the early 20th century, circa 1930.
The upper depiction could be Rahu, one of nine navagraha (Hindu celestial bodies), and is the ascending node of the moon. Rahu is complimented by Ketu, the descending node of the moon.
Indian astrology is an integral part of religious & cultural traditions and is deeply complicated. The lower half of this horoscope features the yantra of the 12 bhavas (houses). These painted Indian horoscopes are real curiosities for us and we just love them.
