Framed Chinese Pith Painting of a Pleasure Boat - Late 19thC

Framed Chinese Pith Painting of a Pleasure Boat - Late 19thC

This lovely antique Chinese gouache painting is of a Chinese pleasure boat from Canton. Painted on pith paper and dating from the 19th century, they were made for the European market which enjoyed a fascination with all things Chinese and Chinoiserie from the Georgian period onwards.

Pleasure boats were mainly used for recreation by wealthy Chinese and visiting western traders and sailors. Canton had many waterways and notoriously busy streets, so many traders operated from boats selling everything from ducks to coal.

Pith paper is made from the spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. Pith is incredibly fragile.

This old Chinese gouache painting has been reframed by our skilled team in a simple gilt frame.
