Elm Altar Table From Shanxi - 19thC
This Chinese altar table is made in classic Ming style dating from the 19th century and from Shanxi province in Northern China. Originally fully lacquered with black lacquer, the top lacquer has long since worn from everyday use revealing a beautiful northern elm grain. Old incense marks and wear can be seen on the top giving a good patina.
Perfect for a small desk in a study or as a dressing table. Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China & Mongolia. Usually a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well being of the household. These tables also doubled as occasional tables in Chinese traditional homes.
See the final photo for an original painting of how altar tables were used in traditional Chinese homes.
