Elm & Catalpa Sideboard From Tianjin - 19thC

Elm & Catalpa Sideboard From Tianjin - 19thC

Tianjin sideboards come from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in North China. The simple design originated during the Ming dynasty.
Our pieces are mostly 19th century & early 20th century; they were usually made from elm, oak or catalpa and occasionally in camphorwood. The fittings are made from brass and are mostly circular in form, but occasionally rectangular.
These cabinets were used for storage & also as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
