Indian Pidha Dowry Chair From Shekhawati - 19th Century

This lovely Indian chair is from the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan and is called a pidha chair. These were low chairs with backrests and traditionally were given to Indian brides on their wedding day.  They are most commonly found in tribal settings in Northern India and were used daily by all family members.

This example has been carved in the traditional chip carved style. It features horse heads flanking three stylised lotus flowers (symbols of fertility) and geometric patterns. The woven seat has been replaced.
