Chinese Green Glazed Roof Tile.

Chinese Green Glazed Roof Tile.

These mischievous looking old Chinese green roof tiles have been coated in a deep green glaze. The perfect curiosity to liven up a dull corner. These tiles are salvaged from old buildings being torn down in the name of progress.

There were strict rules during the Ming & Qing dynasties about who could use what colour of roof tiles. Green tiles were reserved for wealthy mansions of princes, religious buildings, and city gates. The most iconic example is The Temple of Heaven in the Forbidden Palace, Beijing. It should be noted that buildings of worship usually had blue roof tiles.
