Chinese Flower Stand From Shanxi -19thC

Chinese Flower Stand From Shanxi -19thC

This Chinese flower stand is made from walnut and dates from the 19thC. Although most Chinese flower stands are from Jiangsu, this piece unusually is from Shanxi province further north. Also, uncommonly, it is also made from walnut wood which was originally lacquered. The lacquer has long since worn away. This particular piece has handy shelf with spindles.

This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables besides a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs each side of a mantel piece.

See the final photo for an original painting of how altar tables were used in traditional Chinese homes.
