Chinese Flower Stand From Jiangsu - 19th Century

Chinese Flower Stand From Jiangsu - 19th Century

This Chinese flower stand dates from the 19th century. Made from red elm (zelkova) and known in China as 'jumu' or 'southern elm.' Red elm as the name suggests has a more red tone and has a more aesthetically pleasant grain. It was considered in China to be superior to its northern elm relative. Red elm is the typical wood used in pieces from Jiangsu province.

This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables besides a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs each side of a mantel piece.

This particular piece has a cracked ice shelf at the base, usually a mark of quality. It also features a drip tray around the edge which is a challenging feat of carpentry.
