Book Chair With Rattan Seat From Zhejiang - 19th Century
These antique Chinese chairs are called meigui yi or book chairs. Book chairs were unusual for Chinese chairs as they were the only style of Chinese chair made in larger sets. This set of six Chinese book chairs is from Zhejiang and dates to the late 19th century.
These chairs are constructed predominantly from catalpa wood but parts are also made from walnut and northern elm woods (yumu). They have rattan sets supported by wooden panels. The seat level is 50cm making these chairs ideal for dining tables or a high desk.
